Mothers Union
(Written by Ailsa Gill, President of Mothers’ Union, St Paul’s Manly)
Kay Voltz and Ailsa Gill represented the Manly branch at the Council Meeting in Robina on Tuesday. Guest speaker Dr Stephen Harrison, Director of Mission, Research and Advocacy at Anglicare Southern Queensland, gave an update on the youth homelessness accommodation project at Beenleigh, which is nearing completion.
Mothers’ Union has contributed $80,000 towards furnishing six one-bedroom apartments in the complex. The facility will also include 23 studio rooms to support singles, couples, and young families aged 16–25 as they work towards
independent living. Donations from our August retiring collection have supported this project.
Dr Harrison also spoke about homelessness and the growing demand for food banks and emergency accommodation. While these services meet immediate needs, he stressed the importance of addressing the deeper structural causes of homelessness.
One striking fact shared was the increasing number of people over 80 seeking housing assistance. Recently, Anglicare was able to secure accommodation for a 90-year-old homeless woman.
