Hymns & Pimms
Manly Wynnum Mothers’ Union had a lovely morning on Tuesday singing our favourite hymns (see the Playlist below) while wetting our whistles with a cool glass of Pimms (or non-alcoholic fruit punch). Although missing our music maestro, Bev, who’s still fighting off a nasty bug, President Ailsa managed to search Spotify for all our favourite hymns (with a little Red Hot Chilli Peppers included for good measure) for the sing along.
Once again Amanda dusted off her cocktail making skills to stir up the Pimm’s and a tasty non-alcohol fruit punch. Thanks to everyone who attended what is fast becoming a favourite MU event each year.
In closing the meeting, we paid special tribute to Beryl, who has been a MU member since 1953 and, as she is turning 98 next week, has decided she is no longer physically able to attend MU meetings in person.
Synod Report 2026 (Part Two)
Motions of Interest
Synod passed a motion supporting exploration of the National Anti-Racism Framework, affirming the value of cultural diversity and committing to addressing racism. Fr Sam Sigamani has seconded this motion and St Paul’s Manly Parish has voted to endorse this motion.
A motion titled “Jailing is Failing” was passed, calling for greater investment in evidence-based alternatives to imprisonment, recognising the impact of incarceration on vulnerable communities, and giving thanks for the ministry of prison chaplains.
Synod also addressed the shortage of clergy in rural and remote areas, particularly in the Western Region. Bishop Cameron Venables noted that there are currently no full-time clergy west of Toowoomba. A working group will be established to explore new models of rural ministry and report back in 2027.
A motion on climate justice and a just transition from fossil fuels was passed, affirming the Church’s responsibility to care for creation and encouraging parishes and agencies to engage with sustainability initiatives. The debate reflected a range of views within Synod, with strong support as well as some opposition.
Overall, Synod provided an opportunity for important conversations about governance, ministry, safeguarding, social justice, and the future mission of the Diocese.
