Happy Birthday Beryl
In honour of Beryl’s recent 98th birthday and over 73 years of Mothers’ Union membership, we would like to share a little about Beryl’s amazing life.
Beryl was born on 6th August 1928 in Toowoomba. Her parents and siblings lived on a dairy farm and attended Brymaroo school and later Beryl attended Glennie School in Toowoomba.
Beryl was married in Toowoomba in 1950 and then moved to live in Oakey where she attended St Augustine’s church. It was here, on 23rd June 1953, that Beryl was admitted to Mothers’ Union. In 1958, the family moved to Wynnum and Beryl joined as a member of St Peter’s Wynnum branch.
Beryl has held many positions in the branch including Enrolling Member, President, Secretary, Treasurer, IPC Secretary – all positions for multiple years. She has attended special services at the Cathedral for Lady Day, Mothering Sunday, Prayer Links, IPC, Social Responsibility and Prayer and Spirituality.
Beryl has been active in numerous community outreach projects as an MU member including Meals on Wheels from its commencement in the Wynnum area in 1967. Beryl was the driver, and with a co-worker, delivered meals for many years.
Beryl presented knitted teddy bears made by MU members for children waiting for their parents at court hearings. She also knitted beanies for the Mission to Seamen at the port of Brisbane, and beanies and booties, for premmie babies at Cleveland hospital.
Beryl was one of the organists at St Peter’s for many years, and played for sing-a-longs at Nursing Homes in Wynnum. In the 1970’s a MU group would sing Christmas Carols in the nursing homes.
Beryl’s family is five children, ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Her husband Bill died in 1986, and sadly one of her daughters has passed away from cancer.
