Waterloo Bay Probus Club visits Holland Park Mosque

Many of us have travelled overseas and been privileged to visit some beautiful Mosques. However, did you know there is a beautiful Mosque right here in Brisbane that includes a wonderful Muslim Museum?

The Holland Park Mosque has an important place in Queensland’s history. Established in 1908, it was the first mosque on Australia’s east coast and became a well-known landmark in the Mt Gravatt area. The original building was a traditional wooden Queenslander, later replaced by the present mosque building in 1966.

During our visit we were warmly welcomed by the Imam, who shared with us insights into the life of the mosque and the Islamic faith. It was a valuable opportunity to learn about the role of the Imam within the community and the many activities that take place at the mosque, not only worship, but also education, community support, and outreach programs.

We heard many stories of bravery and pride in being Australian. Our visit increased our understanding of another faith tradition and highlighted the importance of mutual respect, learning, and friendship between people of different backgrounds and beliefs.
